Trixie is a delightful, energetic American Cocker Spaniel aged approx. 6-7 years.  She is a typical Spaniel as she likes to be close to her people and will follow you everywhere you go.  She is a hunter and when exploring her yard she will go into the hunter pose – lifts one paw, stands perfectly still and looks straight ahead.  She will stay like that until she is called (several times) or touched.  She loves to play fetch with her ball or go on walks.  We are working on her leash training as she tends to pull when following a scent.  She is getting better at this.  She does need a fenced yard as her nose directs her path.  We never leave her out in the yard on a leash and she stays within the confines of the fence.  She chews on her leash when you try to put it on for a walk so we assume that perhaps she put out in the yard and left on a leash.

When she came to us it was because her owner had passed and she had been left in the house alone.  A neighbor would come and give her food and water until they got tired of doing that.  The police were called and she went to a foster home in Salmo.  She was originally from the Fernie area.  She came to us in Jan./26.  She had a couple of seizures upon arrival and we took her to the vet where she was diagnosed with epilepsy.  She was given phenobarb which she takes twice daily and things appear to be under control.  The vet said she may have them once in awhile but they will be minor and not affect her overall health.  She has had a complete blood workup to check for other issues and her results were good.  We took her back again after a month for another blood workup to make sure her phenobarb levels were where they should be and she had a complete physical as well.  All is good – heart, lungs, etc.  Vet and lab report available if required. The vet was very happy with her weight and would like to see her diet kept the same and her weight consistent.  We don’t feed her from the table and treats are apples, bananas, carrots, piece of cabbage, etc.  She also had an ear infection, common for long eared dogs, and drops were prescribed.  It cleared things up and she now gets drops once a week for protection.

She is a lovely dog and very friendly.  She greets people exuberantly and loves to play.  We don’t know how she is with cats or children.  She does not like it if you put your face down to hers (I was trying to snuggle with her) but she will growl.  We think it is something from her past and maybe a fear reaction.  She loves being patted and her butt scratched.  She likes other dogs but is cautious.  Large dogs, especially black ones, or excitable dogs tend to make her nervous and a bit cautious.

    Medication cost –

    Phenobarb – 52.70 / per month

Ear drops – 53.40 (bottle will last a long time)

She is fully housetrained and she sleeps in her own bed.

We hope that she can find a calm, patient and loving home where she can be truly herself.  This is very hard for us as we love her dearly but as our personal situation has changed we find it necessary to find Trixie a new forever home full of love and energy. I think I may be allergic to her dander.  She would do well with someone with a bit more energy as well although she seems to accept our slower pace.
